Co-operative for single mums to produce recipe book

-

MIRI: Miri Single Mothers Cooperative Bhd will publish a recipe book to assist its members.

Chair Majenah Mohd Yusuf said the book will contain 20 modern and traditional recipes contributed by members.

“The book will cost RM5 per black- and-white edition. We are looking into the possibility of producing five volumes of recipe books.

“Depending on the budget and response from members and members of the public, we are looking into the possibility of a coloured edition,” she said Majenah on Thursday.

She said the co- operative, set up in 2014, now has 106 members.

“As there are still many single mothers and single ladies yet to register as members of the cooperative, including from Miri Single Mothers Association, we call and encourage them to come forward to register as members,” she said.

“Because of social stigma and lack of knowledge and information, many are still struggling to support themselves and their children. It is sad to see some of them unable to exploit or expand their culinary, tailoring, beauty and make-up skills among others, due to a lack of capital and other assistance.”

She added that the co-operative is also looking into the possibility of providing short or basic computer courses on online marketing and promotion.

Secretary Jennifer Ura Kebing, a single mother of six, said she has had the opportunity to attend cakemaking and decorating courses through the co- operative.

She now operates a home-based catering business.

“Currently most of the marketing and promotion are by word of mouth. To expand my business, I need some guidance on online business and some capital to purchase an industrial oven and other cake-making equipment,” she said.
