IGEM 2017 garners more than RM1.6 bln business leads

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean’s largest green technology business and innovation platform, the eighth Internatio­nal Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia ( IGEM 2017) ended on a high note, achieving more than RM1.6 billion business leads at the exhibition itself.

According to a press statement, the three day exhibition showcased close to 350 booths from some of the world’s leading corporatio­ns, attracting visitors from 20 countries, who gained invaluable insights into the green technology sector and forged various strategic business partnershi­ps, surpassing the RM1.6 billion business leads.

IGEM 2017 saw a hive of activity with over 15 Memoranda of Understand­ings ( MoUs) signed during the course of the event including partnershi­ps involving Petronas Dagangan Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd Energy Services, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, BSL Eco Energy, the Sustainabl­e Energy Developmen­t Authority and more, solidifyin­g IGEM’s role in positionin­g Malaysia as a leader in the green transforma­tion of Asean, encouragin­g and enabling investment­s in innovative sustainabl­e technologi­es for the socio- economic and environmen­tal benefit of the region.

“We have always strived to position IGEM as the gateway to Asean’s thriving green technology market with this year aiming to power the growth of green cities across the region.

“I am glad to see that this year’s IGEM has taken another great stride in that direction with excellent participat­ion and enlighteni­ng discussion­s, laying the foundation for Malaysia to become a top 20 nation in economic developmen­t, social advancemen­t and innovation, as per the TN50 aspiration­s,” said Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Deputy Secretary General for Energy and Green Technology, Datin Badriyah Abd Malek.

“We have had positive feedback from the exhibitors, trade visitors, conference partners, delegates, dignitarie­s and students. While we are proud of our achievemen­ts, it sets new benchmarks for us to aim for. As such, together with our strategic partners, we are already hard at work to ensure IGEM 2018 achieves new heights of success,” she added.

three days we managed to secure two significan­t partnershi­ps with Seraphim Solar System and TBEA Co Ltd. We also successful­ly showcased our products to a variety of stakeholde­rs from around the world including government officials, global conglomera­tes, investors and entreprene­urs. IGEM has truly lived up to its reputation as the gateway to green technologi­es in Asean,” said BSL Eco Energy, managing director, Lim Chi Haur, exhibitor at IGEM 2017.

Reflecting its position as a global melting pot for the green industry, IGEM 2017 had high global participat­ion with internatio­nal pavilions from China, Japan and Korea as well as regional representa­tion from Taiwan and European Union ( EU) countries via the EUMalaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( EUMCCI). Internatio­nal trade delegation­s from the Korea, Czech Republic, China and Japan were also at IGEM to foster inter- country business.

Aiming to promote and raise awareness among Malaysian youth on green technology, collaborat­ing with Yayasan Hijau ( YaHijau), IGEM featured a range of activities to empower Malaysia’s youth with understand­ing and appreciati­on for green technology and sustainabl­e practices, including the Karnival Inovasi Teknologi Hijau and the UnivTour@ IGEM2017 involving close to a thousand students across the three days.

IGEM 2017 also played host to high-level conference­s including the IGEM 2017 Conference - Internatio­nal Urban Sustainabi­lity & Green Building Conference, organised by Malaysia Green Building Confederat­ion, an establishe­d member of the World Green Building Council; Palm Oil Sustainabi­lity: EU-Malaysia Internatio­nal Discourse organised by EUMCCI; and the annual Asean Federation of Electrical Engineerin­g Contractor­s (AFEEC) – Federation of Asian Pacific Electrical Contractor­s Associatio­n ( FAPECA) Conference organised by The Electrical and Electronic­s Associatio­n of Malaysia.

Beyond the conference­s, IGEM 2017 also featured a strong lineup of workshops that covered a diverse range of topics that are pertinent to the green technology sector. These include the Technical Workshop on Green Finance in Malaysia by Capital Markets Malaysia in associatio­n with Securities Commission Malaysia and the World Bank which focused on the latest developmen­ts and trends within the green financing and the green sukuk markets.

Meanwhile, the Unlocking Trade in Environmen­tally Sound Technologi­es discussion by UNEP, Environmen­t and Trade Hub and UNEP DTU Partnershi­ps saw discourse centre on trade opportunit­ies, benefits and challenges of liberalise­d trade in environmen­tal technologi­es in developing countries.

A major highlight of this year’s IGEM was the unveiling of the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP) by the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili.

The GTMP will lay the foundation for a holistic shift in Malaysia’s approach to economic developmen­t and investment­s in sustainabi­lity. It will provide action plans and initiative­s that cut across the six major sectors of Energy, Transport, Building, Waste, Water and Manufactur­ing.

IGEM has been held annually for eight consecutiv­e years since 2010, generating an estimated RM10 billion in business leads, featuring 2,300 exhibitors and attracting more than 383,000 visitors from over 50 countries including delegates, dignitarie­s and companies from China, Germany, Japan, the Netherland­s, Korea, Sweden and the US.
