IGEM 2017 garners more than RM1.6 bln business leads
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean’s largest green technology business and innovation platform, the eighth International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia ( IGEM 2017) ended on a high note, achieving more than RM1.6 billion business leads at the exhibition itself.
According to a press statement, the three day exhibition showcased close to 350 booths from some of the world’s leading corporations, attracting visitors from 20 countries, who gained invaluable insights into the green technology sector and forged various strategic business partnerships, surpassing the RM1.6 billion business leads.
IGEM 2017 saw a hive of activity with over 15 Memoranda of Understandings ( MoUs) signed during the course of the event including partnerships involving Petronas Dagangan Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd Energy Services, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, BSL Eco Energy, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority and more, solidifying IGEM’s role in positioning Malaysia as a leader in the green transformation of Asean, encouraging and enabling investments in innovative sustainable technologies for the socio- economic and environmental benefit of the region.

“I am glad to see that this year’s IGEM has taken another great stride in that direction with excellent participation and enlightening discussions, laying the foundation for Malaysia to become a top 20 nation in economic development, social advancement and innovation, as per the TN50 aspirations,” said Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Deputy Secretary General for Energy and Green Technology, Datin Badriyah Abd Malek.

While we are proud of our achievements, it sets new benchmarks for us to aim for. As such, together with our strategic partners, we are already hard at work to ensure IGEM 2018 achieves new heights of success,” she added.

We also successfully showcased our products to a variety of stakeholders from around the world including government officials, global conglomerates, investors and entrepreneurs. Reflecting its position as a global melting pot for the green industry, IGEM 2017 had high global participation with international pavilions from China, Japan and Korea as well as regional representation from Taiwan and European Union ( EU) countries via the EUMalaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( EUMCCI). International trade delegations from the Korea, Czech Republic, China and Japan were also at IGEM to foster inter- country business.
Aiming to promote and raise awareness among Malaysian youth on green technology, collaborating with Yayasan Hijau ( YaHijau), IGEM featured a range of activities to empower Malaysia’s youth with understanding and appreciation for green technology and sustainable practices, including the Karnival Inovasi Teknologi Hijau and the UnivTour@ IGEM2017 involving close to a thousand students across the three days.
IGEM 2017 also played host to high-level conferences including the IGEM 2017 Conference - International Urban Sustainability & Green Building Conference, organised by Malaysia Green Building Confederation, an established member of the World Green Building Council; Palm Oil Sustainability: EU-Malaysia International Discourse organised by EUMCCI; and the annual Asean Federation of Electrical Engineering Contractors (AFEEC) – Federation of Asian Pacific Electrical Contractors Association ( FAPECA) Conference organised by The Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia.
Beyond the conferences, IGEM 2017 also featured a strong lineup of workshops that covered a diverse range of topics that are pertinent to the green technology sector. These include the Technical Workshop on Green Finance in Malaysia by Capital Markets Malaysia in association with Securities Commission Malaysia and the World Bank which focused on the latest developments and trends within the green financing and the green sukuk markets.
Meanwhile, the Unlocking Trade in Environmentally Sound Technologies discussion by UNEP, Environment and Trade Hub and UNEP DTU Partnerships saw discourse centre on trade opportunities, benefits and challenges of liberalised trade in environmental technologies in developing countries.
A major highlight of this year’s IGEM was the unveiling of the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP) by the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili.
The GTMP will lay the foundation for a holistic shift in Malaysia’s approach to economic development and investments in sustainability. It will provide action plans and initiatives that cut across the six major sectors of Energy, Transport, Building, Waste, Water and Manufacturing.
IGEM has been held annually for eight consecutive years since 2010, generating an estimated RM10 billion in business leads, featuring 2,300 exhibitors and attracting more than 383,000 visitors from over 50 countries including delegates, dignitaries and companies from China, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Korea, Sweden and the US.
