Three, including student, nabbed for suspected terrorist activities

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested three men including a form six student at a restaurant in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan believed to be involved in terrorist activities.

The Inspector- General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the three were picked up at 8.17pm on Oct 10 by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division.

He said all of them were suspected of being involved in planning to carry out attacks at the Better Beer Festival 2017, entertainm­ent centres and places of worship in Klang Valley using self-made ‘ Improvised Explosive Devices' (IED). Mohamad Fuzi said the first suspect, 19, who would be sitting for Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) in November was believed to be able to produce IED as well as being the chief planner of the Better Beer Festival 2017 attack.

According to him, the second suspect was a 34-year- old army personnel who was believed to be involved in seeking funds to produce the IEDs.

“The third suspect, 25, from Perak was a constructi­on contractor and was linked to the Gagak Hitam gang involved in conducting the bombing at an entertainm­ent centre in Puchong last year,” he told a special media conference here yesterday. They were believed to have tested their IED at an open space on Sept 28 and investigat­ions found the explosives were effective up to 30 metres, he added.

He said police also seized the materials used to produce IED including PVC pipes, batteries, firecracke­rs, fireworks, carbide, matches, wires and two mobile phones while a picture of IED was believed used as the formula.

Meanwhile Mohamad Fuzi added that since January to date, 78 individual­s had been arrested in the country believed involved in violent activities. — Bernama
