STF back from M’sia Open with 13 gold medals

SIBU: Sarawak Taekwondo Federation ( STF) amassed 13 gold, two silver and three bronze medals at last weekend’s 2nd Malaysia Open Internatio­nal Invitation Championsh­ip in Kuala Lumpur.

STF vice president Pang Ming Siing described the improvemen­t from the 10 gold at the previous edit ion as unexpected but encouragin­g.

“It was a good opportunit­y for our players of mostly youngsters to gauge their standard,” he said.

Chen Lin, Agnes Wong Ming Ming, Janice Lau Jia Ni, Elaina Tan Yi Qiao, Carine Tan Yi Shi, Hiew Chung Lung, Shelzandar Ubu and Kent Chin Hong Yang.

Chow Tong from SM Catholic High, who competed in the 1417 age category, won two gold in the breaking events ( knife hand strike and punch) and a third gold from poomsae while SMK Tiong Hin’s Emanuel collected two gold in breaking events (elbow strike and punch) and another bronze in sparring.

Except for Hong Yang, all the rest secured their gold medals in the poomsae events.

The si lver medal i sts are Nicholas Tieh Xuan Huei and Teng Ming Qing while the bronze medalists are Louis Pang Ke Xiang and Kelvin Ling Yi Hao.

STF sent 23 athletes to the championsh­ip which attracted over 600 competitor­s from 11 countries including Indonesia, Singapore, Iran, Cambodia, India, Syria, Canada, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Nepal.
