Enviro Ride sees 300 cyclists take to the street for National Environment Day
KUCHING: Some 300 cyclists took part in an event jointly organised by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and the Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday in conjunction with the state-level National Environment Day 2017.
Dubbed ‘Enviro Ride’, the event aimed at building commitment towards caring for the environment, saw cyclists cover a distance of 30 kilometres around the city.
It also aimed at promoting cycling as an alternative mode of transportation that is environmentally friendly, as well as to enhance cooperation between the government and corporate sector towards the common vision of conserving and rehabilitating the environment.
SEB group chief operating officer Lu Yew Hung and DoE state director Mohd Hidzir Bakar flagged of the ride at Menara SEB.
Also present was Mahmood Long, SEB’s environment division manager.
In his speech, Lu said SEB was glad to be part of the statelevel Environment Day 2017 as environmental conservation and management was one of the four pillars under its social investment and community development framework.
“We are committed to sustainable development at all levels of our business as we believe that sustainable development is a shared responsibility requiring long-term and continuous commitment.
“In achieving this, we will continue to work closely with various government agencies, corporations and nongovernmental bodies to ensure good management practices on our part,” he said.
Lu added that working together with other governmental and non-governmental agencies, SEB – through its Environment Division – has rolled out a series of environmental awareness programmes to enhance environmental citizenship among school children, youth, and the general public and also among its employees.
“Some of these programmes include tree planting activities with school children, youth and villagers at Kampung Masjid at Kuala Baram, Miri in conjunction with World Wetlands Day 2017.
Other programmes included the Safety, Health and Environment Week campaign, which featured talks on the environment by DoE and Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB); Household E-Waste Take Back Programme; Environmental Communication, Education & Public Awareness Programme (CEPA) for school students from SMK Petra Jaya at Matang Wildlife Centre; as well as the Green Run and Green Photography competition.”
