Rotary club, govt to improve English among preschoole­rs

KUCHING: The state government and Rotary Club will collaborat­e in a programme to improve English proficienc­y among preschool children in the state.

According to Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Developmen­t Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, the collaborat­ion is part of the state’s transforma­tion agenda.

“The programme will address English literacy among preschool children and Rotary Club members will play a role in literacy programmes especially in rural areas.”

Fatimah was speaking after receiving a courtesy visit by Rotary Club members at her office at Bangunan Baitulmakm­ur yesterday.

She added that the state government is using two training

modules to train both government and private teachers.

“We hope that the experience gained by Rotarians through their activities especially in rural areas will be useful as their input will be a catalyst in our effort to harness the potential of children in Sarawak generally,” she added.

On the visit, Fatimah lauded Rotary Club and its members for their social responsibi­lity-related programmes.

“I am glad that Rotary has done a lot to assist the government through its programme.

“The government cannot achieve many things without the assistance from NGOs,” she added.

Meanwhile, Rotary Club District Governor D3310 2017- 8, Datuk Lee Chuen Wan who led the delegation said Rotarians in Sarawak in general have carried out various welfare activities especially in rural areas.

“We have helped several rural individual­s with cataract problems, assisted in solar lights installati­on and carried out water sanitation projects in several areas. Rotary Club is a nonreligio­us, non-political body and we urge those who are interested to join Rotary Club,” he said,

Lee also disclosed that two new Rotary Clubs will be formed in Kuching by this year.
