WAK 2017: Sarawak Heritage Street Food this weekend

KUCHING: There will be a Sarawak Heritage Street Food this Friday to Sunday at the India Street Pedestrian Mall here as an ethnic culinary experience for visitors and locals to sample and enjoy, in conjunctio­n with the What About Kuching 2017.

It aims to promote tourism and enhance culinary arts by encouragin­g and promoting cultural heritage and diversity, said Datin Dona Wee, one of the five organising committee heads which also include Datin Esther Gerawat Balan, Marian Chin, Laura Bara and Gracie Geikie, at a press conference yesterday.

She said that besides food by different ethnic groups, the committee also aims to promote ‘Made in Sarawak’food products such as Bario Rice, Sambal Cabe Ijo among others, produced by local enterprise­s.

“We intend to use this event as a showcase for the small entreprene­urs and businesses. For this inaugural street food event under our banner, we hope to attract more than 20 types of stalls and will promote this to the general public. Uber will also be offering a free chicken wing to all fi rst time Uber users,” she said.

She said that each day of the event will feature different culinary workshops under the theme ‘Flour Power’ starting at 6pm and another one at 7pm. The workshops are open to the public on a first come fi rst serve basis and the participan­ts and families can stay to sample the delicacies from the Foochow, Hakka, Teochew, Bidayuh, Malay, Iban, Kayan and Kelabit communitie­s.

On Friday, the workshops are Celorot and Roselle Snow Mooncakes; two sessions on noodle making on Saturday and Senape Buned and Tupik Banuak on Sunday.

“We invite the public to come with friends and families to be part of this inaugural Heritage Street Food event.”

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is expected to officiate at the event.
