Foreign fishermen remanded in connection with child molest case

KUCHING: Eight Vietnamese fishermen, who were arrested in connection with a child molestatio­n case, were yesterday remanded for seven days to facilitate the investigat­ion.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 48, were produced before court registrar Satia Kombi, who allowed the remand applicatio­n made by the police investigat­ion officer.

A police report was lodged against them by the four-year- old girl’s parents and they were picked up at a house in Matang around 5am on Monday.

It is understood that the girl was left under the care of the men while her parents ran errands.

The men were brought in by the girl’s father, who owns a deep sea fishing business.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 354 of the Penal Code.

In the same court room yesterday, a man accused of committing several armed robbery cases, and who escaped police custody on Monday, was placed on a four- day remand order.

Zulkipli Morni, 34, was detained by police on Tuesday following a manhunt less than 24 hours after his escape at a house in Kampung Kelka in Simunjan.

The suspect will be detained in police custody until Oct 29 and produced in court again.

He is currently on trial for an armed robbery case and had been denied bail.

On Monday, Zulkipli escaped from police custody at Kuching District police headquarte­rs and fled in a white car.

It is understood that police are hunting for the driver of the car, who is suspected to be his accomplice in the escape.
