Over 1,200 job seekers attend career internship fair, talk to employers directly

KUCHING: The Sarawak Career and Internship Fair on Tuesday attracted over 1,200 job seekers.

A press release said this year’s 22 participat­ing companies included Sarawak Energy Berhad, Ernst & Young, Speedwing, Longi ( Kuching) Sdn Bhd, Keyence Malaysia, Press Metal, CPA Australia, Intern2u, Tokio Marine, Out of Box, Nielsen, Hilti Asia IT Services, OBYU, Great Eastern, and Career Star Internatio­nal.

The event was supported by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, UCSI Sarawak, Segi College Sarawak, Executive College, Cosmopoint College of Technology, Technology College Sarawak, Lim Kok Wing Institute of Creative Technology, Sidma College Sarawak, Fame Internatio­nal College, PTPL Sarawak, SATT College, Sunway College Kuching, Asia Metropolit­an University ( Masterskil­l Global College Kuching), and Internatio­nal College of Advanced Technology Sarawak ( ICats).

Visitors had the chance to speak directly to employers and find out what they are looking for in hiring the right candidates.

Students currently pursuing their studies were also able to find out about internship placements and training programmes.

A few companies offered on-thespot applicatio­ns and conducted face-to-face interviews.

SEB Human Resources executive Danielle Clarke said the fair allowed the company to recruit local talents, particular­ly in the fields of electrical, electronic and mechanical engineerin­g.

“By taking part in this event, it also gave us the opportunit­y to highlight our company’s corporate branding as we are commonly known as Sesco, and many are unaware of the bigger scope our company is involved in,” she said.

Ernst & Young senior manager (tax) Anne Chong said the company sought to recruit technicall­y competent candidates who are equipped with relevant technical skills, possessed excellent academic results, proficient in English, armed with a great personalit­y, and the ability to interact with confidence.

“Ernst & Young offers a fulfilling career experience for its employees where we also provide in-house training to enhance their skills to enable them to move forward in their career,” said Chong, adding that besides recruiting those with an accounting or finance background, the company also sought to hire those with an IT background.

Swinburne Sarawak has an overall graduate employment rate of over 93 per cent, with 100 per cent employment reported for several of its business and engineerin­g programmes.

Students benefit from the integratio­n of industry needs in the teaching and learning process at Swinburne through capstone projects in the final year, internship opportunit­ies with leading companies, career talks and guidance, as well as a global alumni network.
