MIRI: Miri Petroleum Ladies Association ( PWPM) held its Deepavali 2017 Open House on Wednesday, in keeping with one of its main goals of promoting cross- cultural exchange among its multi-national members.

Some 40 members attended the event where many, including nonIndian members, led by President Srimurniyati Cranfield wore Indian attire to add merriment to the festival.

During the open house, members were briefed by Bharathi Anand on the significance of Deepavali or Diwali, which is also known as the Festival of Lights a victory celebration of good over evil

“During Diwali, we normally dress up in our new and bright coloured clothes as a sign of happiness, joy and victory and hope all good things come our way throughout the year,” said Bharathi.

Cranfield, in a brief address, 2017 has been a good year for PWPM where members were able to hold many activities including open houses for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Diwali and recently the International Women’s Day ( IWD).

“Through such activities like today’s Diwali Open House hosted by our Indian members, we could further promote greater understanding of the various multi-national cultures and traditions.

“We hope all of our members, including interested ladies in Miri, could join in our international annual dinner on Nov 4 at Pullman Hotel here,” she said.

During the Diwali Open House, members were served various Indian delicacies such as paratha, muruku, naan, malaikofta (vegetable dumpling in creamy sauce) spinach, cottage cheese, chicken masala and chicken biryani.

Guests also enjoyed traditional Indian and folk dance performances.
