KUCHING: The Internal Security and Public Order Department of the Royal Malaysia Police has made significant seizures of smuggled goods and arrested illegal immigrants.

With the setting up of a new intelligence unit, we can double our efforts to make arrests and seize more smuggled goods occurring along the border across the country. Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah, Internal Security and Public Order Department of the Royal Malaysia Police director

Director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah said this was due to the hard work of the General Operations Force ( GOF) and marine police.

He said the GOF seized about RM13.5 million worth of various goods such as cigarettes and drugs smuggled from across the border into the country last year.

Up till September this year, the GOF made 3,443 arrests including those trying to sneak illegally into the country.

For the Marine police, Zulkifli said a total of RM69.5 million worth of items were seized last year, while up till last month seizures stood at RM58 million.

He said there would likely be more arrests and seizures next year with the setting up of a new intelligence unit.

“With the new unit, we can double our efforts to make arrests and seize more smuggled goods occurring across the border the country,” he told reporters yesterday after launching a police basic training course at the Police Training Centre, Km24 Jalan Borneo Heights.

On militant activities in the country, he said the situation was under control, adding that the police are monitoring such activities.

He also said the police are well prepared to face the election, stressing that the number of personnel has been determined to be deployed during nomination, campaigning and on polling day.

Zulkifli said the personnel to be deployed for the election have been trained for their respective duties, pointing out that the police Light Strike Force and Public Order and Riot Unit would also be deployed during the election.

On the training, he said personnel would be equipped with multiple skills and knowledge to suit their duties.

He added that the police would also be taught warfare tactics even though the country is not facing any particular threats.
