KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions in humanitarian activities and services to the people of Sarawak.

The recognition was introduced by Lions Club of Kuching- Kota Samarahan and presented by charter president Dr Francis Fong in conjunction with its 13th anniversary celebration held at The Sarawak Club on Wednesday night.

Abang Johari described the award as a platform to continue providing more effective humanitarian programmes, especially in helping the less fortunate in the state

“I urge all Lions Club members to come forward to help the government organise humanitarian programmes in the effort to transform the people, especially in rural areas, to a better life.

“The efforts to transform rural areas cannot depend solely on physical development alone. It should also be done through the sharing of knowledge and information from all parties.

“So to achieve this, the upgrading of telecommunications system is the right step in achieving digital economy for Sarawak,” he said.

The chief minister believes that upgrading the telecommunication system will allow the people, especially in rural areas, to master knowledge and information easily and quickly.
