KUCHING: A joint education taskforce committee comprising Trienekens ( Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and Padawan Municipal Council ( MPP) launched a solid waste education and recycling awareness programme with SK Taba Sait yesterday.

SK Taba Sait is one of schools under the council’s jurisdiction to adopt Trienekens’ recycling programme in its commitment towards becoming a green school.

The project engages both pupils and staff to practise segregating their school waste from the pointof-generation.

The programme is a collaboration between MPP, Trienekens and SK Taba Sait. Speaking at the launch, Trienekens Environment and R& D manager Dayang Sherrynazra Awang Sharkawi said the programme was introduced to educate pupils about environmental sustainability and stewardship through the 3R ( Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) concept and best practices in solid waste management.

She said since the start of the programme, the school with a population of 75 pupils, has successfully collected about 52kg of recyclables.

She congratulated the teachers, pupils and the project’s joint taskforce committee for their commitment throughout the implementation process, adding that its success was due to the basic understanding that recycling is not driven by money but also due to increased awareness in preserving natural resources and the importance of maintaining environmental sustainability and cleanliness through education.

“One of the most common problems we encounter as a service provider is ignorance and the indifferent attitude towards cleanliness and proper waste disposal.

“Therefore, we want to play a part in educating the younger generation about recycling, waste management and environmental impacts.

“Over time, we hope that recycling can become a part of our lifestyle towards sustainable, clean and healthy living,” she said.

SK Taba Sait headmaster Jameson Simod said the programme was beneficial for his pupils as it provided them with the opportunity to learn and experience segregating waste first-hand.

He thanked the council and Trienekens for their collaboration and support throughout the implementation of the programme.

In addition to the waste separation practices and scheduled collection of recyclables, Trienekens also conducted additional environment-themed educational activities such as awareness talk, Amazing Green Race game, inter- class most collected recyclables contest, colouring, poster design and ecofashion competitions and other green initiatives for the school.

After the launching ceremony, Dayang Sherrynazra and MPP deputy chairman Dato Ahmad Ibrahim presented waste disposal bins and prizes to the school and the contest winners.
