Sarawak Women for Women Society to conduct training

-

KUCHING: The Sarawak Women for Women Society ( SWWS) will hold a series of training days with the help of the Women and Family Department to skill women wishing to join the society.

SWWS is also extending places to relevant non- governmental organisations and members of the department.

A press release yesterday said women are still disadvantaged despite advances made.

“If you doubt this, look at the cases of poverty amongst single mothers; reports of domestic violence, rape and sexual abuse that fill the newspapers as well as the plight of teenagers who are pregnant,” said SWWS president Margaret Bedus.

The press release said effective ways of helping women need to address such disadvantage and give women knowledge and support so they are empowered.

SWWS provides a crisis phone line and speaks out on problems affecting women, but requires more members.

The first stage of training on Nov 11 is entitled ‘Tackling gender inequality, discrimination and abuse’.

It will help participants know more on women’s rights locally and internationally and the importance of empowering women to overcome different forms of abuse.

For those who wish to volunteer to directly help women, a second stage of training will be held on Nov 18-19 to introduce participants to the basic skills required by a para- counsellor or befriender.

A third stage will be held to discuss specific types of problems and developing skills on to address such difficulties.

To register, call 013- 8044285 during office hours or email sarswws@ gmail.com.
