45,000 expected at Miri Christmas parade

MIRI: Some 45,000 people are expected to take part in the 10th Miri City Christmas Parade on Dec 9 at the Miri City Fan.

Mayor Adam Yii said this year’s parade themed ‘Glory to God’ will be hosted by the Anglican Church.

“The participan­ts are representa­tives from 15 churches here and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg has been invited to fl ag off the annual Christmas event,” he told a press conference yesterday.

As a prime event in Miri’s calendar of events, Yii said he looked forward to a massive turnout.

( junction of SK Syed Othman), Unity roundabout leading to Jalan Kipas ( Federal Complex), Jalan Unus (road between AlTaqwa Mosque and Federal Complex), and Unity roundabout leading to Jalan Kipas ( SK Bintang).

Seven access roads would be closed in stages – Jalan Sylvia, Jalan Brooke, Jalan Kingsway, Jalan China, Jalan Bendahara, Jalan Merbau and Jalan North Yu Seng.

The programme will begin with Christmas Carols by the Anglican Church at 6.35pm, followed by the proclamati­on of the Word of God by Anglican Bishop of Sarawak and Brunei – the Right Revd Danald Jute.

The Roman Catholic Church will then lead praise and worship with a band.

A group from the Borneo Evangelica­l Mission ( BEM) will perform a traditiona­l dance followed by a choir as well as praise and worship.

The guest of honour is expected to flag off the parade around 9pm.
