Diver Wendy Ng fails doping test — Asum

KUALA LUMPUR: A poser surrounding an athlete linked to doping at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games Festival ( KL2017) was answered by the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) yesterday.

She is diver Wendy Ng Yan Yee.

Asum secretary Mae Chan confirmed that the result of the KL2017 gold medal winner’s ‘ B’ sample was known yesterday morning and further action would be announced after receiving the necessary feedback from the Asum executive committee (exco) members.

“Unfortunately, yes, we need to reveal that she is the diver who actually failed ‘A’ Sample. We will have a press conference soon on a decision on this matter.

“The ‘ B’ sample result came this morning and I need to speak to the executive committee members and then, we will have a press conference to disclose the result.

“I’ve not spoken to her ( Wendy) yet. We do not know ( what action would be taken) because a carbon copy of the letter (on result of ‘B” sample) was also sent to FINA ( International Swimming Federation) ” she told reporters when met at the Bukit Jalil National Aquatics Centre here.

Chan said she would inform Asum president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim on the matter first before commenting further over the outcome of the case.

The local media, prior to this, reported that a national woman diving athlete who won gold medals at the KL2017 in August was believed to be among three athletes who failed their doping tests.

Asum also confirmed that the national athlete took a banned substance, sibutramine which is normally found in slimming products. Wendy reaped two gold medals in the individual women’s 3- metre springboard event and 3- metre springboard synchronised event with Nur Dhabitah Sabri at the KL2017.

Meanwhi l e , Chan said Wendy would not take part in the fourday 2017 FINA Grand Prix Diving Championship in Kuala Lumpur, which started yesterday. —
