Chieng and Ung win student leadership award

SARIKEI: Chieng Neng Teik and Ung Lik Ru were named winners of school’s Boys’ and Girls’ Student Leadership Award respective­ly at SMK Tinggi Sarikei’s excellent award presentati­on ceremony last Friday.

Chieng was picked, based on the leadership skills shown throughout his tenure as the boy’s deputy head prefect, treasurer of Futsal Club, commander of school’s Brass Band and vicechairm­an of the school’s Rukun Negara Club.

He was also actively involved in various co-curricular activities whereby he represente­d the school in the national-level Chemistry Quiz, youth forum, English Debate and National Science challenge among others.

Ung who was the girl’s deputy head prefect was impressive in academic and co-curricular activities.

She was ranked among the top five in Form 5 Science and top scorer in Chinese, Moral Education, Physics and Biology.

She helped the school team win gold in HRCA English and Science Quiz 2017, champion in State-level UCSI Science and Mathematic­s Quiz, bronze winner in Kangaroo Mathematic­s Malaysia competitio­n, and first runner-up in Sarikei Divison Secondary School Choral Speaking competitio­n.

She represente­d the school in the Australian Mathematic­s Malaysia and National Chemistry Quiz, and was vice-chairperso­n of Road Safety Club, committee member of Badminton Club, Leo Club vice-chairperso­n and assistant treasurer of the Robotic Club.

The Sports Boy of the Year was Ngu Ing Biao who did the school proud in the discus event by bagging a bronze in the second Asian Youth Athletic meet in Thailand this year, fifth place in the Sixth Commonweal­th Youth Games, and gold in the 59th MSSM Track and Field Championsh­ip and Sarawak Junior Athletic Meet.

The Sports Girl of the Year was Celine Khoo Wei Eng who bagged a bronze for shot putt in the 59 MSSM Track and Field meet, gold for shot putt in MSS Sarawak Track and Field Championsh­ip and Sarawak Junior Athletic Meet, and bronze in discus at the MSSS championsh­ip.

The Boy’s Exemplary Student was Ling Yeo Han while Nichole Chiew Zi Ching won for the girl’s category.

Repok assemblyma­n Dato Huang Tiong Sii who officiated at the ceremony presented the six awards listed under his Education Fund.

The ceremony saw some 900 students receive certificat­es of appreciati­on and prizes in recognitio­n of their contributi­on as prefects, running clubs, associatio­ns and uniformed bodies as well as making the school proud through excellence in academics and co-curricular activities like sports.

Among those presenting the awards and prizes were Principal Ting Sing Teck, management board chairman Pemanca Chan Phan Chan, PTA chairman Kiing Chiu Kuo, and Ex-Student Associatio­n chairman Dr Chieng King Chong.

Huang presented his contributi­on of RM10,000 for the school fund during the function.
