Wong urges Toastmasters to bond regional friendship
SIBU: Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh says Toastmasters can help foster the spirit of oneness among the multi-cultural community in the region.
Speaking at the opening of Toastmasters District 87 SemiAnnual Conference yesterday at RH Hotel here yesterday, he said the feeling of oneness among the people from different parts of the region is still lacking.
“Unity has many dimensions; political, economic, cultural, and psychological even though we are separated geographically.
“This gathering would transcend the barriers of countries, the barriers of race, religion and culture through Toastmasters movement,” he said.
More than 300 delegates from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Indonesia attended the conference which started on Oct 27 and ends today.
Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister said the acceptance of one another’s ethnic origins, religious beliefs and cultural heritage are necessary for the unity of their own countries and states.
He noted that the delegates were separated geographically and hence gatherings such as the conference could enable them to get together to share their experience and perhaps chart the future roadmap for Toastmasters in the region.
“This gathering would also enable you to have the opportunity to interact with one another so you can better understand one another and thus, eliminate any parochialism, mistrust and suspicions.”
He also said that no individual or country could exist separately especially in a fast changing global economy and information technology.
He added that nations which could adapt to the fast moving waves of technology would succeed.
“But I know that it is difficult for some, but necessary for all,” he said.
He added it was important for everyone to update themselves with the latest knowledge and skills to facilitate their own success.
Also present at the event were the chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Datuk Tiong Thai King, Toastmasters District 87director Reuben Chin, organising chairperson Wong Toh Hee, Toastmasters International first vice president Deepak Menon and past International president George Yen.
