GCM ‘open house’ receives stream of visitors

MIRI: A steady stream of people thronged Gymkhana Club Miri’s (GCM) ‘open house’ yesterday which enabled members of public to try out various club facilities without having to pay for the privilege.

Organising chairman Richard Soo was happy with the turnout of visitors and also participan­ts of the various activities held yesterday and hoped that more will come today, the final day of the ‘open house’ from 10am to 5pm.

“We encourage more people to come to this annual event, as part of our community service besides promoting the club and give opportunit­y to the public to try our Club’s facilities free of charge,” said Soo when met yesterday.

Several stalls operated by GCM and members of the public are selling various items from handicraft­s to food. Among the food are local delicacies such as homemade satay, nasi kukus, ayam berempah, banana cheese & chocolate, chicken pie, laksa, gula apong tea, western food and mee jawa.

There are also stalls operated by non-government­al organisati­ons (NGOs) and charitable bodies like the Palliative Care Associatio­n Miri, Mental Health Associatio­n Miri Branch, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Miri Branch and craft producers from Miri and also Bintulu.

There are also fun-filled activities such as colouring contest and spelling bee for primary school children and GCM karate championsh­ip, sports activities which include running obstacles games, American tennis and weightlift­ing.

There is a halloween corner, creative photo contest and also free swimming lessons for the public.

In conjunctio­n with the Open Day the Club is having its membership promotion of RM1,000 rebate from its entrance fee. In addition, any individual who signs up for the membership will also stand a chance to walk away with exciting lucky draw prizes.
