MCMC identifies possible sources of personal data leakage
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified the possible sources of leakages that may have caused data breach of 46.2 million mobile phone subscribers in the country.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said investigations were being done by the MCMC with the cooperation of the police to enable immediate action to be taken to resolve the issue.
“The MCMC has recent ly convened a discussion with the telcos on the data leakage issues and is currently working with the police to investigate it. So far, it has identified sources where the data had possibly leaked.
“Of course, we will take immediate action to resolve this matter,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Dewan Rakyat sitting here yesterday.
The minister said legal action could be taken against anyone who was found to have leaked personal data according to the existing laws, including the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
Salleh said the investigation would emphasise on two questions, namely who leaked the data and where did they get the data from.
Last Monday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed that police were investigating a claim involving data breach of 46.2 million mobile phone subscribers in the country.
It was reported that Lowyat.net had published an article about breached database, involving 50 million data from Malaysian telcos, and 17 million rows of customers information from job search sites. — Bernama
