Suspect in assault on Rela men tests positive for drugs

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The man, with the title ‘ Datuk Seri’, being detained for allegedly assaulting three members of the People’s Volunteer Corps ( Rela) who were on duty at a temple in Kampung Baru Ampang last Friday, will also be investigated for drug abuse.

Deputy Inspector- General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said this was based on the suspect’s urine test which was positive.

Following the result of the urine test, the case will also be investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act, he told reporters after attending a Deepavali celebration at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters here yesterday.

He said investigation on the suspect also revealed that he had a previous record for a drugrelated offence. The suspect is now in remand for four days after he was arrested Monday when he surrendered himself at the Ampang district police station.

In the 6.30am incident last Friday, the three Rela members – Melvin Cheong Mun Khai, 19, Lee Weng Poh, 27, and Leong Jiun Jie, 21, – were injured on the head, eye and abdomen, when allegedly hit and kicked by the ‘Datuk Seri’ man.

It happened after the Rela members requested the man to move his Toyota Vellfire as the vehicle was obstructing traffic, but the man refused to do so.

In another development, Noor Rashid said the Royal Malaysia Police ( PDRM) was in contact with Thai police to facilitate investigation into the arrest of a 19year-old Malaysian man suspected to be involved in a ‘Macau Scam’ syndicate headed by a Taiwanese gangster.

The man was arrested following Friday night’s raid on a condominium where Thai police rescued a Malaysian woman and arrested five of her compatriots, as well as a 29-year-old Taiwanese man, who the authorities suspected was the syndicate’s ringleader. — Bernama
