Society to promote Miri as tourist destination through photo exhibition
MIRI: Miri Photographic Society will look to promote places of interest, events and activities in and around Miri in an exhibition to be held next month.
Organising chairman Sylvester Wong disclosed that the exhibition is slated to be held from Dec 4-11 at Bintang Megamall here.
“The exhibition of colour photos will feature the works of 20 professional photographers who are members of the society. Entrance is free and the exhibition is open during the mall’s operating hours,” he explained.
According to Wong, the exhibition is part of the society’s contribution towards the development of the tourism industry and to create awareness of Miri as a tourist destination and resort city.
The main agenda of the society is to promote local professional photographers and their works and, at the same time, to improve the quality and standard of photography.
Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said Miri is still a relatively new and unknown destination in the region and across the globe, and thus needs a lot of marketing and promotional efforts not only from industry players, but from the community as well.
In this context, organisations with global and regional affiliation, including from the private sector, should lobby for some of their activities and programmes to be here in Miri, he said.
“Apart from that, they could also distribute and share some print, including audio visual promotion and marketing material, to their counterparts when attending international and regional activities such as conferences and meetings,” Lee suggested during a courtesy call on him by the exhibition organising committee recently.
Commending the society on their contribution and playing some role in the development of the local tourism industry, Lee called for more audio-visual production which he said is a more attractive and effective way to market and promote Miri as a destination in the region.
