Aw Yong denies Ka Tung, Angel coasts to easy victory

KUCHING: Aw Yong Jhie Jgin foiled four-time champion Lee Ka Tung’s bid to win the Samarahan Amateur Open title for the fifth time at Samarahan Country Club last Sunday.

The Kelab Golf Bintulu player fired a three-day gross total of 216 (73, 73, 70) strokes to beat Kelab Golf Sibu’s Ka Tung by six strokes to lift the Brian Chien Chai Yng challenge trophy.

Lau Ching Leong, also from Sibu, beat Kelab Golf Sarawak youngster Aziel Teo Ken Yi into fourth place On Count Back ( OCB) a f ter bother gol fers recorded a similar score of 225 strokes.

One stroke further in fifth spot was Lee Kah Tiong while the sixth to 10th positions were o c cupie d by Moh ammad Lokman Mustaffa ( 229), Wong Tung Ann ( 231), Johari Aman (233), John Ling Cheng Ong (235 OCB) and Raymond Lai Vui Hiung (235). For the record, Ka Tung has won in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016 while Ching Leong won in 2013.

In the men’s nett category, Muazan Mohamad returned a score of 205 to beat Tan Haw Liang (205 OCB), Ben Sim Chiaw Hiang (215), Lo Cheng Ken (217 OCB), Ahmad Adib Ridhwan (217) respective­ly.

The ladies gross category saw junior star Angel Hii posting a three- day score of 230 strokes to beat Nicole Wong Yeng Ping (265) into second place while the top finishers in the ladies nett were Lia Rajemah with 223, Asha Nabela (227) and Amber Tho (245).

Meanwhile, the men’s invited guests category saw John Then Yu Bin lifting the nett title after he fired a 70, followed by Nicholas Lau with a 71 and a stroke further back in third place was Vincent Bong while John Then Su Yew emerged as the gross winner with a 87.

Pauline Gan carded a 76 to win the ladies nett title in the invited guests category.
