Jabu reappointed Unimas pro-chancellor II
KUCHING: State science research advisor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang has been reappointed Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) pro-chancellor II until October 2019.
Unimas vice- chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohammad Kadim Suaidi led a delegation to present the letter of appointment to Jabu yesterday.
Kadim said the reappointment acknowledged Jabu’s contributions, service and unwavering support to the development of higher education.
“Datuk Patinggi (Jabu) was first appointed as the pro- chancellor in 2013 and reappointed in 2015 for the second term. This will be his third term, which is a very high honour given by the government,” he told a press conference.
Jabu pledged to work hard and give his best to the university.
“The university has performed and developed exceptionally well throughout the years, notably with the university’s ranking improved as well as in line with the Chief Minister’s (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) aspiration in developing Sarawak’s digital economy in order to become an advanced state by 2030,” he said.
Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is Unimas chancellor while Abang Johari will be installed as pro- chancellor on Monday ( Nov 6) during the university’s 21st convocation.
Kadim said the ceremonies from Nov 6- 9 will see over 4,120 graduands receive their scrolls – the largest number since 1997.
“There will be 3,676 bachelor degree graduates and 444 postgraduates. More importantly, this year’s convocation will see 68 students awarded doctorate degree, the largest number by far,” Kadim said.
He added 40 per cent of the graduates or 1,688 are from Sarawak.
“In addition, the Convocation Festival (ConFest 2017) is another highlight of the celebration in which many interesting and exciting programmes and activities have been scheduled in the campus from November 3 until 11. We invite everyone to come and join us,” he said.
The Unimas delegation comprised deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman, Chancellery and International Relations Office director Assoc Prof Dr Abang Ekhsan Abang Othman, registrar Henry Tening Sengeng, and executive officer to the vice-chancellor Mohd Husaini Noorjaya Chew.
