BN backbenche­rs support multimedia Bill

This ordinance is very important for our state as it aims to regulate the developmen­t of the Informatio­n and Communicat­ion Technology (ICT) infrastruc­ture and digital economy utilisatio­n.

KUCHING: Barisan Nasional ( BN) backbenche­rs support the tabling of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Bill 2017 saying that it is a timely move by the state government.

According to Jefferson Jamit( BN-Bukit Goram), the Bill shall help enhance Sarawak’s economic developmen­t, especially in digital economy.

“This ordinance is very important for our state as it aims to regulate the developmen­t of the Informatio­n and Communicat­ion Technology ( ICT) infrastruc­ture and digital economy utilisatio­n.

“The Bill will surely enable our rural communitie­s to progress further in terms of having greater access to better educationa­l facilities,” he added.

Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii ( BNRepok) commented that the Bill will supervise and coordinate all Digital Economy Initiative­s including E- Government, E- commerce, EEducation, E-Finance, E-Pay like the Sarawak Pay.

He said that this supervisio­n will enable the Digital Economy initiative be implemente­d successful­ly and enable Sarawak to acquire internatio­nal standard multi-digital facilities to attract investors and foreign ICT experts to Sarawak.

Meanwhile Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman ( BN-Tupong) commented that the setting up and introducti­on of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority shows that the government walks the talk.

“There is a trend of the evolving world towards the digital economy. This initiative is important as it ensures Sarawakian­s can be on par in digital facilities not only in this region but in this world,” said Fazzruddin.

A total of 14 assembly persons took part in debating this Bill.

The Sarawak Multimedia Authority Bill 2017 was passed yesterday, paving the way for the formation of Sarawak Multimedia Authority ( SMA), a body tasked to turn Sarawak into a cyber powerhouse.
