MIRI: Family members sending sick relatives for treatment here or the bodies of deceased loved ones back to Lawas can have better peace of mind when Persatuan Anak Jati Lawas Miri district association office and lodging facilities start operating by early next year.

Association chairman councillor Alias Mail recently said renovation and related works would take about three months once the plan has been endorsed by the executive committee for the rented premises at E-mart Riam Commercial Centre near Miri Airport Road intersection.

He said this after receiving the keys to the rented first and second floor of a shophouse from Muhamad Azmil Ismail representing property owner Amanah Khairat Yayasan Budaya Melayu Sarawak (AKYBMS).

The association thanked Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and the charitable board general manager Dr Sanip Said for enabling it to rent the premises at a nominal sum.

“This will provide family members a place to stay in town while sending sick loved ones from Lawas to Miri for treatment, or arranging to send back bodies of the deceased,” he said.

It assists family members with permit application for crossborder movement of bodies of loved ones back to Lawas for burial, and other arrangements for the welfare of association members and the community from Lawas.

Awang Tengah who is also the association’s patron and Bukit Sari assemblyman responded to its request for office premises and the need to cater to this group of people from Lawas at the last Raya Tamah gathering on July 16.

Alias said this association would also become the reference point for those wanting to send their children for further education in Miri or elsewhere.

“We thank our deputy chief minister for his speedy response to our requests and Amanah Khairat Yayasan Budaya Melayu Sarawak for upholding the welfare and needs of the people from Lawas here,” he said.
