PARTI Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu ( PBB) supreme council member Dr Nuing Jeluing has been elected as the new Senator from Sarawak to replace Datuk Lihan Jok.

The election took place yesterday at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) among its members saw Dr Nuing receiving 69 votes while the other nominee Nicholas Bawin Anggat received 10 votes.

The election was necessary as Lihan’s term in the Dewan Negara will expire on Dec 7. Lihan has been the Senator for two consecutive terms (six years).

Dr Nuing’s nomination was proposed by Minister of Utilities Dato Dr Stephen Rundi Utom ( BN- Kemena) and seconded by Assistant Minister of Corporate Affairs Abdullah Saidol ( BNSemop). Baru Bian ( PKR-Ba Kelalan) nominated Bawin, and this was seconded by Chong Chieng Jen ( DAP-Kota Sentosa).

Dr Rundi, when proposing Dr Nuing’s name, said Dr Nuing held various senior posts in Shell both in Malaysia and internationally including as senior medical advisor with rank of general manager, before retiring in 2007.

Dr Nuing also served in various government hospitals. He now runs his private practice in Miri. Dr Nuing is also active in politics, as PBB Kakus branch chairman since 2009 and PBB supreme council member since 2013.

Dr Rundi also informed the august House that Dr Nuing had written to confirm his consent to serve as Senator if elected.

“With his vast experience and wide knowledge in politics, medical and professional health services, I strongly believe Dr Nuing Jeluing is very appropriate to be elected by this Dewan to be a Senator.

“And I am confident he will contribute meaningfully to represent the people of Sarawak in the Dewan Negara,” he said.
