KUCHING: The Laila Stroke Rehabilitation Centre gives hope to stroke patients who may have thought they would be unable to recover, says Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib.

She says the centre, named after her late mother Datuk Amar Puan Sri Laila Taib, allows patients to interact and motivate each other to exercise as part of the recovery process.

“We have therapists to help patients do certain exercises and also encourage them to interact in the centre because most of the time, stoke patients tend to isolate themselves.

“Family members often do not know how to seek help and a centre like this enables patients to interact with those who have gone through the experience,” she said during a tea party yesterday to celebrate World Stroke Day as well as the centre’s 10th anniversary.

Hanifah, who is the centre’s advisor, said more needs to be done to educate the public on stroke and to let patients know that there is a place where they can seek help.

Meanwhile, the therapist-incharge of the rehabilitation centre, Caroline Petra Adriaanse, said the aim of the tea party was not only to celebrate World Stroke Day, but also to create more awareness about the rehabilitation process following a stroke and on facilities available at the centre.

She disclosed that the centre is a non-profit charitable organisation run by Lembaga Amanah Khairat Darul Hana and presently has 28 regular clients coming in for group exercise sessions one to three times a week.

Adriaanse added Normah Medical Specialist Centre is supporting the centre by providing staff members who have expertise and are trained in treating stroke patients.
