DCCI organises business management seminar for contractors
MIRI: Forty potential Dayak contractors involved in the oil and gas, construction, oil palm, labour and manpower supplies from within and around Miri region are participating in a 4-day business management seminar for contractors at Dynasty Hotel from Nov 7–10.
Officiating at the event on Tuesday, DCCI deputy president Kilat Beriak said it would not be good for the Dayak community to be left behind by the others.
“The Dayaks are mainly agrobased people hence business activities are relatively new to them and, as such, they have no choice but to learn the basics of business management to get involved in the modern economy of the country for their share of opportunities in the government and the private sectors,” Kilat said.
“It’s encouraging to note that among the 40 attendees, 10 are ladies — some of them homestay operators. These women homestay operators have already attended management courses organised by DCCI in Miri in 2016.”
DCCI in a statement yesterday said several of the participants were experienced and qualified professionals previously employed by reputable companies. They had recently retired and are looking for opportunities in business relevant to their qualifications and experiences. A number of them are oil palm smallholders keen to harness the potential in the oil palm industry.
The seminar was conducted by trainer Campbell Apau, a DCCI member who is among the few CIDB- certified trainers in Sarawak. DCCI Secretariat plans to organise a similar seminar for other Dayak contractors in the northern region next year.
Also present at the opening were Billy Usit and Telajan Luyoh who are both entrepreneurs and Supreme Council members and Samy Nanang, a course coordinator for Miri.
Others included DCCI executive secretary Terence Temenggong Jayang, DCCI capacity manager and IT executive Mabel Salin, and Eleanor Edward from DCCI Secretariat.
