‘UCA not confined to looking after Chinese community only’

SIBU: The United Chinese Associatio­n Sibu Division ( UCA Sibu) works hand-in-hand with relevant government agencies and department­s in trying to solve problems of the Chinese community, while also looking into interest of other communitie­s in mind.

“UCA Sibu goes about getting things done not purely in the interest of the Chinese community.

“They are there only facilitati­ng some of solutions to some of the problems and issues of the Chinese community, working closely with the government agencies and department­s concerned. They came out with a solution,” Minister of Internatio­nal Trade and E- Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said at UCA Sibu’s 40th Anniversar­y Dinner on Saturday.

He represente­d Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the function, who sent his apology for not being able to attend the function as he was attending the 150th Anniversar­y of the establishm­ent of Sarawak State Legislativ­e Assembly (DUN) and the opening of the Golden Bridge in Kuching.

Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister, pointed out that the leaders of UCA never went about inciting the Chinese against any qaurters .

“They are very level-headed and all along they are working together with relevant government agencies and department­s – trying to solve the problem of the Chinese community but at the same time, they also have in mind the general interest of other communitie­s,” he added.

UCA Sibu president Kong Hian Khim also spoke at the function.

The event also witnessed presentati­on of donation to Sibu Chinese Independen­t Secondary Schools besides viewing of a video on the history of the associatio (UCA glorious 40) and presentati­on of long service awards.

Among those present were vice- consul of the General Consulate of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Zhang Yang, event organising chairman Lau Kim Foo, president of the Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns Sarawak Hii Teck Yun, Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee, Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau and Temenggong Stanley Geramong.
