‘SUPP must ensure Lanang, Sibu seats go to party’
SIBU: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party ( SUPP) must steadfastly ensure that its candidates are selected to stand in Lanang and Sibu constituencies in the coming general election.
Newly- elected Dudong branch chairman Wong Ching Yong said the issue was one of three motions passed during the branch’s second triennial general meeting yesterday, and was aimed at making sure so- called ‘BN- direct candidates’ are rejected.
“As our party president has said many times, politically SUPP has recovered Kuching Division, Miri Division, Sarikei and Bintangor, and the only remaining political force of United People’s Party (UPP) is in Sibu.
“The five SUPP branches in Sibu are having a tough time. We don’t have YB ( elected representative) and are facing a lot of problems, including the appointment and nomination of community leaders,” he said in a press conference following the meeting.
On the branch’s second motion, Wong said the branch wanted the state government to intervene in the decision by MASwings to cease flight services in six sectors in Sarawak next year without giving any convincing reason.
He said the branch was of the view that the cessation of the flight services was irresponsible and will cause huge inconvenience to the people in Sarawak.
“We urge the state government to urgently intervene with this decision and if MASwings is unable to resume flight services, the state government must find alternatives to provide flight services for the six sectors.”
On the third motion passed, he said the branch strongly supports the stance of the United Association of Chinese Primary Aided School Boards of Management, Sibu and Kapit Divisions that all smaller Chinese primary schools should not be merged, but instead reallocated to towns or cities where the population is higher.
Wong, meanwhile, also expressed his gratitude to the immediate past chairman of SUPP Dudong branch, Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck for nurturing him politically over the past 20 to 30 years, as well as to the members for supporting him as the new chairman.
“I am looking forward to working closely with other four SUPP branches in Sibu, particularly Bukit Assek branch, because the two branches share a common parliamentary constituency in Lanang.
The other SUPP Dudong officebearers for 2018-2020 term are Kelvin Kong Sien Chiu as deputy chairman; vice- chairmen Ling Hung King, Cr Ladong Engkol, Liew Kwan Hua and Cr Kong Yii Tee; Kong Sing Ping as secretary to be assisted by Dr Wong Chya Wei, Cr Frederick Taip Ledom and Cr Christopher Ugot Nyaring; and Daniel Sng Wei Siong as treasurer to be assisted by Kong Fwa Ping.
