Village sepak takraw court to be turned into youth activity centre — Ting
MIRI: The existing sepak takraw court for Kampung Piasau Utara will be upgraded into a youth activity centre.
Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said the upgrading work would be done in stages.
“Currently, this village only has two courts - one for sepak takraw and the other for futsal.
“I’ve received application from the villagers to build another court for basketball,” he told The Borneo Post after officiating at Sports and Youth Skills Training Institute ( ILKBS) Volunteerism Programme at Kampung Piasau Utara yesterday.
Ting, who is SUPP Piasau chairman, said further that he would get some funds from the state government for the first phase of the project which involved building the basketball court.
The next phase of the project, he added, would be building a roof over the new court and installing lighting in the area to enable the court to be used for conducting activities at night.
“The existing court has not been used for so long due to lack of maintenance.
“Thanks to the volunteers from the institute for helping villagers clean the court and hopefully after this, the people would able to fully use the recreational facilities provided by the government to conduct healthy activities.”
On the volunteerism programme, he said it was conducted by National Youth Skills Training Institute ( IKBN) Miri to expose its students to community work and instil the spirit of volunteerism.
He hoped the institute would conduct more search community programmes for the students to prepare them to be future leaders.
Also present were Ketua Kaum Hipni Sulong, IKBN Miri lecturer Dennis Dempi, students and the villagers.
