KUCHING: The state government treats seriously the value of tourism to the economy, and values the role of the private sector in tourism industry, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said.

Citing an example of the part tourism plays in the state’s economy, he said the demand for hotels usually increased during peak seasons such as school holidays or major events.

“The private sector plays a significant role in tourism, and having said that, the government is ready to assist the private sector for any development in relation to tourism,” said Awang Tengah.

He was speaking at the official opening ceremony of Roxy Hotel here yesterday.

According to Awang Tengah, Roxy Hotel, which is operated by Tecktonic and Sons, had fulfilled the prerequisites of a proper development, which is in line with the Kuching City decentralisation policy on development.

The private sector plays a significant role in tourism, and having said that, the government is ready to assist the private sector for any development in relation to tourism.

“Today this hotel stands out prominently at the Third Mile Interchange, providing additional rooms for the guests, tourists both domestic and foreign, and that role is very much significant,” he said.

He also pointed out that the state had received 3.72 million visitors during the first nine months of this year, very close to the target of five million visitor arrivals by year-end.

“This big number means the opportunity to run the hotel business is bright and worthwhile,” he added.

Located strategically at Jalan Batu Kawa, near the Third Mile roundabout, Roxy Hotel accommodates budget and family travellers but with a sense of luxury in mind.

According to Tecktonic and Sons managing director Lee Chin Teck, the hotel, which is eightstorey high, has 58 rooms and three different room packages.

“Roxy Hotel also caters to the business and corporate entities, offering a conference room with facilities that can house up to 30 persons,” he said.

Another attraction of Roxy Hotel, according to Lee, is the Cha Cha Moon restaurant, located on the seventh floor of the hotel.

“From this restaurant, guests and patrons will have a very nice view of Kuching City, Third Mile and its surrounding area and the view is even nicer at night,” he added.

At the event, Lee presented a donation of RM10,000 to Kuching Autistic Association. Also present were Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
