KUCHING: Several old residential areas in Sibu are in dire need of redevelopment to uplift the image of the town centre.

With that in mind, Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) had submitted a proposal of the redevelopment to the state government for consideration, Datuk Tiong Thai King ( BNDudong) said.

“The old residential areas of Sibu town from Brooke Drive through Hua Kiew Road, Belian Lane, Tiong Hua Road, Tong Sang Road, Bukit Assek to Amoy Road are in dilapidated condition.

“Most owners of properties in these areas have moved out to new development areas leaving their properties to their tenants. Many of the properties are in sorry state with narrow roads and sinking terrain and drains.

“The areas are also identified as high risk dengue breeding grounds. SMC has submitted a proposal to redevelop the areas and I hope the chief minister could seriously consider the urban redevelopment proposal to uplift the image of Sibu town centre,” he said in his debate on the budget speech yesterday.

He said SMC had proposed a waterfront for Sibu stretching from the Sibu Express Terminal all the way along Jalan Khoo Peng Loong to the Tua Pek Kong Temple under many Malaysia Plans but the proposal had never been considered.

“A detailed plan has been submitted to the state government for consideration under the mid-term review of 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

“The proposed waterfront will serve as an ideal public recreational space and help to reintroduce the once hectic Khoo Peng Loong Road which currently is dark and quiet at night,” he added.

He pointed out that certain

important junctions in Sibu town were facing acute traffic congestion at peak hours such as Jalan Ulu Sg Merah/ Persiaran Brooke, Jalan Ling Kai Cheng/ Jalan Deshon, Jalan Wong King Huo/Jalan Oya and Jalan Oya/ Jalan Deshon.

To resolve the congestion, Tiong said a few new roads or upgrading works had been proposed under the mid- term review of 11MP, through the Land and Survey Department Sibu and Public Works Department (JKR) Sibu.

The proposed works included widening of Jalan Oya from Jalan Oya/Jalan Pahlawan junction to Jalan Oya/Jalan Deshon junction, new road linking Bulatan Aman and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and new road linking Jalan Ulu Sg Merah and Jalan Deshon/Tunku Abdul Rahman, he added.

“I strongly appeal to the State Planning Unit to seriously consider approving these proposed projects in the coming mid-term review of 11MP.”
