Chief: Bukit Assek SUPP Youth has done well, strives to recruit 200 more members
SIBU: Bukit Assek SUPP Youth chief Joseph Chieng is pleased with the performance of his youth section for the past three years.
Speaking at the section’s triennial general meeting (TGM) on Sunday, he said their achievements were obvious, as they begun three years ago with 100 members; now, the membership has doubled.
He attributed this to the commitment and solidarity among members of the youth wing.
“For the next term of office, I throw the challenge here to call on members to recruit at least 200 more to further strengthen us. Let us contribute to the nationbuilding process.”
In the meeting, the youth section passed five resolutions which included the resolve to fully back efforts in protecting Sarawak’s autonomy to safeguard the state’s sovereignty.
Chieng said: “Sarawak and Sabah should not be considered as federal states, but Malaysia’s equal partners. The nation must abide by the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“We fully support the efforts of the Sarawak government towards this.” Chieng said Bukit Assek SUPP Youth also wanted the Unified Examination Certificate ( UEC) of the Chinese schools to be recognised as it is accepted by local private institutions and other tertiary educational institutions worldwide.
“We call on the government to speed up the negotiations with the federal government.” Chieng said Bukit Assek SUPP Youth also called on the government to solve the problem of overcrowding at Oya Road Polyclinic.
He said the problem was acute, adding that there could be over 1,000 patients at busy hours and an average of 700 patients during non-peak hours. Chieng suggested building another clinic to replace the current one as an option.
He said Bukit Assek SUPP Youth also proposed to increase air flights between Sibu and Kuching, Miri, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu.
He said they also proposed a direct flight to- and-from Singapore.
“In the meantime, the government must oversee the airfares for these destinations.”
