‘HOTS proficiency to improve in three years’

PUTRAJAYA: The level of Higher Order Thinking Skills ( HOTS) proficiency among students and teachers will be better in the next three years, according to Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

He said this was because HOTS was not just a programme in which the success could happen in a blink of an eye.

Through HOTS, he said students were expected to have the ability to think and give their answers to any question quickly, besides being able to communicate further about the matter in question, he said.

“For example, if we give them a picture of ‘labu sayong’ (traditional water container), we want them to be able to define the item, including the fact that it originated from Perak,” he told a press conference after opening the Rukun Negara Pledge-Taking Day at Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Precinct 8 (2) here yesterday, which was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.

Organised by the National Unity and Integration Department, the pledge-taking ceremony was held simultaneously at all schools nationwide.

“HOTS is a process, which means the practice will take some time before it can show any desired result.

“When it failed (to show quick result), we don’t blame the teachers, students or the system because it is a process. In fact, to achieve the objectives, teachers are continuously being trained so that they are able to fully understand the HOTS culture,” he said. — Bernama
