Use HK as gateway to enter mainland China

-

HONG KONG: Malaysians firms should use Hong Kong as a gateway to make a foray into Mainland China market, said Malaysia’s Consul- General in Hong Kong and Macau, Tengku Datuk Sirajuzzaman Tengku Mohamed Ariffin.

He said the best part in setting up business in Hong Kong, despite the high cost of living, was that it practised common laws which were not much different from those in Malaysia as it was once under the British rule.

“So it is safe for Malaysian companies when signing contracts or setting up units in Hong Kong. It is a stepping stone into Mainland China,” he told Bernama here on the sidelines of the 9th World Chinese Economic Summit (WCES).

The summit, organised by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute from Nov 13-14, 2017, aims to enhance the connectivity and business linkages between China and Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (Asean).

Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi delivered a keynote address at the summit, themed ‘Managing Global Uncertainty: Exploring New Opportunities’.

It was also held to commemorate and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the signing of the Asean- Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement which complements the China-Asean FTA.

Sirajuzzaman said Malaysians should tap the expertise of the Hong Kong people to set up their businesses here and then to other parts of China.

He said because of China’s big population, Malaysian businessmen could sell a lot.

“For example, Hong Kong has a high standard when it comes to water meters. It bought them from a Malaysian company. Hence, manufactured products have great potentials here,” he said.

Apart from durians, the agriculture products on high demand included pomelos, he said

Sirajuzzaman said Malaysian companies could also get financing in Hong Kong.

“Some Malaysian jointventures received financing and many of the companies got listed on the stock exchange here to get financing,” he said. — Bernama
