SK Mapu, SK St Jude Bunan are U11 hockey champs

KUCHING: SK Mapu and SK St Jude Bunan were crowned the boys and girls champions of the 2nd Serian Divisional U11 Hockey Developmen­t Tournament at the Serian Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.

SK St John Taee and SK St Raymond Mujat were second and third respective­ly in the boys category while SK Pridan/Tanah Merah/Gemang and defending champions SK St John Mantung finished second and third in the girls competitio­n.

The tournament organised by the Serian District Education Office in collaborat­ion with a group of hockey coaches in the division was sponsored by Kedup state assemblyma­n Mart in Ben.

Serian hockey technical officer Kanagaraja­h Rarujanai was extremely pleased with the response to the tournament, with 189 students from 15 boys teams and 12 girls teams taking part in the one- day five- a- side competitio­n.

“The coaches are very dedicated and it was joy to watch the kids enjoying themselves in playing hockey,” he said.

“The competitio­n is aimed at identifyin­g new talents, creating a competitiv­e environmen­t for the students and enhancing ties and friendship between the students, teachers, coaches and schools,” he added.

Kanagaraja­h extended his and the organising committee’s heartfelt thanks to al l those who had contribute­d to the success of the event, especially the sponsor Martin Ben, Serian District Educat ion Of f icer Yunus Apok, state head coach C Sivasubram­aniam, coach Sri Sakrunatha­n @ Murti and the participat­ing schools.
