Miri retain Borneo Cup wushu championsh­ip

MIRI: The Miri Wushu Associatio­n (MWA) lived up to its expectatio­ns when it successful­ly retained the overall champion title in the 3rd Borneo Cup Wushu Tournament at SJK (C) Shan Tao in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from Nov 11-13.

Chief coach Tiong Ching Chiong said MWA exponents won a total of 62 gold, 25 silver and eight bronze medals from 153 events competed.

“I am very happy that Miri successful­ly brought the glory for two consecutiv­e years to Sarawak,” he said.

According to him, all the 34 exponents won at least one gold in the tournament while some won four gold medals.

Five major exponents - Joaness Remong John, Farid Adam, Phang Yii Gin, Lim Ker Yew and Bergkamp Hii Wei Sheng delivered 20 golds for the Miri team in major events,” Tiong told The Borneo Post yesterday

He saw great potential including in Form One and Form Two exponents and this augurs well for Miri team to bring more glory for Sarawak.

“All the newcomers also won 30 gold medals for the Miri team in the junior competitio­n. This is very important as we found that there are a lot of junior athletes performing very wel l at the competitio­n,” he said

Tiong added that the women’s group also won 12 gold medals while the children’s group won 10 gold medals.

He attributed the success to the commitment shown especially by the students from SMK Pujut, SMK Lutong, SMK St Columba, SMK St Joseph, SMK Dato Permaisuri, SMK Lopeng, Riam Road Secondary School, SMK Taman Tunku and SJK Chung Hua (Pujut, Krokop, Tudan, Tukau and Chung San) as well as SK St Joseph.

“These students had prepared themselves well physically and mentally during training and had shown high sportsmans­hip and fighting spirit during the competitio­n,” he added.

“The associatio­n also appreciate­s the full support from the Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin and parents of the exponents and hoped that they will continue to give our team strong support,” he stressed.

One hundred and sixty- six athletes from 14 wushu associatio­ns in Sabah, Labuan and Sarawak participat­ed in the tournament.
