Russia makes all efforts to ensure security at 2018 FIFA World Cup

MOSCOW: Russia is taking all steps on ensuring security at the 2018 FIFA World Cup both in preventing terror attacks and the acts of hooliganis­m, Russia’s TASS news agency reported Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying in an interview with Mexico’s Excelsior daily yesterday.

“Our ultimate priority is to ensure the maximum convenient and safe stay of players and fans in Russia. Russia’s law enforcemen­t agencies are taking all the necessary steps in this direction,” Lavrov said.

In particular, an operation headquarte­rs has been set up that coordinate­s the efforts of respective security agencies to prevent the acts of terrorism. Serious attention is also paid to the problem of football hooligans, Lavrov noted.

“To minimise the risks, we have establishe­d close cooperatio­n with foreign partners, including in the framework of the Council of Europe’s convention, which is open for all states, on a single approach to security, protection and servicing during all sports events, in particular, football matches,” he said.

The Russian top diplomat expressed confidence that the upcoming World Cup will give many unforgetta­ble impression­s to the guests and invited Mexican football admirers to come to Russia and support their team.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held between June 14 and July 15, 2018 in 11 Russian cities namely Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan , Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, Kaliningra­d, Volgograd, Yekaterinb­urg, Samara, Sochi and Rostov- on-Don.

As many as 29 teams have already qualified for the World Cup, which includes World Cup host Russia, Belgium, Germany, England, Spain, Poland, Iceland, Serbi a, F rance, Por tugal , Switzerlan­d, Sweden, Croatia and Denmark ( Europe). Also included Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina ( South America) ; Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama ( North America); Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia (Asia); Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal (Africa).

The final draw for the 2018 World Cup will be held on Dec 1. — Bernama
