Conference on natural resources in tropics to be held in Sibu and Kapit

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) will be hosting the Fifth Internatio­nal Conference on Natural Resources in the Tropics ( NRTrop5) in conjunctio­n with the 25th anniversar­y of its establishm­ent.

NRTrop5 themed ‘ Biological interactio­ns and their functions in comprehend­ing, safeguardi­ng, and utilising tropical ecosystems’ will be held at two separate venues in central Sarawak – at Sibu next Monday (Nov 27) then at Kapit next Wednesday ( Nov 29).

A total of 77 papers will be presented by internatio­nal and national participan­ts at NRTrop5.

NRTrop5 is expected to attract over 100 experts in tropical natural resources from 11 countries namely the USA, the UK, Australia,theCzechRe­public, the Philippine­s, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand, China, Japan and Peninsular and East Malaysia to share their research findings.

NRTrop5 will feature plenary speaker Professor David J Mabberley, an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, University of Oxford, and Extraordin­ary Professor at the University of Leiden, The Netherland­s.

Three keynote addresses will be given by Dr Stuart Davies, director of ForestGEO; Frank H Levinson chair for Global Forest Science and a senior staff scientist at Smithsonia­n Institutio­n, Washington, DC, USA; Dr Wong Khoon Meng, a principal researcher at Singapore Botanic Gardens, Singapore; and Dr Wong Sin Yeng, an Associate Professor in Unimas as well as an Associate of the Harvard University Herbaria.

“NRTrop5 is one of a series of events organised by Unimas throughout 2017 to celebrate its formation,” Unimas said in a press statement yesterday.
