KUCHING: Children ought to be taught from young the benefits of recycling in an effort to have a clean, beautiful earth to live in.

Padawan Municipal Council ( PMC) deputy chairman Dato Ahmad Ibrahim said with the increasing population, infrastructure and economic activities, the volume of waste would also increase.

“There are many approaches we can take to achieve a satisfactory level of cleanliness, including raising the current recycling rate.

“To do so, we need to change our mindset and start teaching our children to recycle from home and schools to ensure that our environment remains intact for the future generation,” he said at Trienekens-PMC joint recycling programme held at SJK Chung Hua Pangkalan Baru near here recently.

He added the council was hoping to raise public awareness on the importance of proper management of solid waste through the programme.

Meanwhile, Trienekens Group Finance and HR general manager Tan Show Boon said the programme was in line with Trienekens’ effort to provide a platform where best practices in solid waste management and recycling could be introduced and incorporated into the school’s learning environment.

“Awareness and education are keys in changing attitude and behaviour.”

She said one of ways to improve the quality of living was to dispose waste responsibly.

“Refrain from illegal dumping and littering in public places. Use the bins provided and start the good habits of recycling both at home and at schools.”

She also thanked the council and SJK Chung Hua Pangkalan Baru for their support and commitment in ensuring the success of the programme.

“I hope such effective collaboration shall continue in the coming years,” she said.

At the function, Ahmad and Tan handed over recycling bins and posters to the primary school, the latest school to take part in the joint recycling programme.

The project aims to educate best practices in solid waste management and segregation and to boost recycling awareness among school children.

Several environment-related activities were carried out such as waste separation practices and scheduled collection of recyclables, awareness talk, Amazing Green Race game, interclass most collected recyclables contest, colouring, poster- design and eco-fashion competitions and other green initiatives for the school.
