Education DG: Report shows overall achievement good
PUTRAJAYA: The maiden Primary School Assessment Report (PPSR) on the evaluation of pupil outcomes in four areas shows that the overall achievement of Year Six students in 2017 was good, but with room for improvement.
Director- general of Education Datuk Dr Amin Senin, who presented the report yesterday, said the report provided a profile of the pupils who would be the nation’s human capital of the future.
The PPSR covers the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah ( UPSR) or Primary School Assessment Test; classroom evaluation; physical activity, sports and co- curricular assessment; and psychometric assessment.
“Our objective was to look at the uniqueness of each pupil and expand their potential based on their reports. Generally, we are satisfied even though there is room for improvement,” he said at a press conference on the PPSR 2017 here yesterday.
On the UPSR results, he said a total of 8,958 candidates or 2.1 per cent of the total 443,794 obtained all As, an increase from the 4,896 in 2016.
Amin said a total of 293,514 candidates or 68.1 per cent attained at least a grade D in all subjects while the number of candidates who did not achieve the minimum result of at least one grade E dropped by 0.9 per cent this year to 30.2 per cent compared to 31.1 per cent in 2016.
“This shows that the performance of UPSR students in 2017 improved compared to 2016,” he said.

On the respective subjects, Amin said there was an overall improvement in the mastery of Bahasa Melayu in both the Comprehension and Writing papers in national schools ( SK) and national-type schools (SJK).
In the case of English Language, he said, the overall mastery increased in 2017, except in the Writing paper in national schools which showed a drop from 77.1 per cent in 2016 to 73.6 per cent this year.
Amin added that the overall achievement for Science and Mathematics also increased this year compared to last year.
For Physical Activity, Sports and Co- curricular Assessment, Amin said a total of 24,612 pupils showed very active involvement in co- curricular activities, were committed and displayed a high level of potential in the activities they participated in.
“Overall, 444, 961 students or 97.4 per cent of all Year Six pupils were involved in co- curricular activities,” he said, adding that this number included the 3,095 special needs pupils who took the Primary School Alternative Assessment Test.
He said 40,957 pupils had a very high level of achievement in the National Physical Fitness Standard (SEGAK) test.
Another 3,644 pupils were at the inactive level while 3,259 were exempted from the test due to health problems which were verified by medical officers. — Bernama
