Buronson’s manga school to open in Saku, Japan

-

BURONSON, the writer of the “Fist of the North Star” manga series, is scheduled to open a free manga school next April in his home city of Saku, Japan, for a year, in an effort to attract and support prospective manga creators from across the nation.

Instructors at the school – dubbed the Buronson 100 hour manga school – will include Buronson and other top-level Japanese manga writers and artists such as Mitsuru Adachi.

The original Japanese title of “Fist of the North Star” is “Hokuto no Ken.” “I want to educate (prospective mangaka) and stimulate their sensitivity,” Buronson said. “I’d love it if students from the school become professional mangaka.”

The costs of the school will be borne by Buronson himself, and he will be its head. Buronson asked other manga creators and writers he knows to participate, and put together an impressive lineup of 12 instructors, including Adachi – the creator of the “Touch” manga series – and Juzo Yamasaki, who wrote the popular “Tsuribaka Nisshi” (Diary of a fishing maniac) series.

Each instructor will be given a free hand to talk about their concepts of manga and their views on technique.

Buronson is also considering bringing in editorial staff from publishers.

Lectures will be given twice a month over the one-year period, except in August next year and January 2019. A total of 20 sessions will be held for a total of 100 hours.

Applicants must be aspiring manga creators or writers. Up to 30 students will be accepted after examination of unpublished original works they have created and interviews. — The Japan News/Yomiuri
