EFL programme offers a fun way to teach English
KUCHING: The state government’s efforts in honing the English language skills of children is a step towards preparing them (children) for formal education.
One of the efforts is the English Fun Learning ( EFL) programme which strives to guide nursery and kindergarten teachers with English language pedagogy knowledge and skills in a fun way.
Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the 15week programme, which was held at 68 centres and 31 districts in the state, ran from June to October, training a total of 2,914 teachers.
“Assessments were also conducted and the results showed that the participants found the course to be very helpful in guiding them to conduct learning activities in English.
“This indirectly enables the educators and caretakers to teach English in a fun way to pre-school children and kindergarteners,” she said at the EFL appreciation dinner here on Monday.
Fatimah said an EFL guide has also been provided for the teachers where references were made based on examples in the National Preschool Standard Curriculum ( KSPK) which are suitable to be taught in English.

She noted that a complete appendix in the form of teaching preparations to facilitate educators is also available. In each appendix, simple English sentences and phrases are provided for them to use during their activities.
“The result of this programme will be skillful teachers who can produce confident children from quality and fun learning experience.
“I trust that teachers who have participated in the EFL programme will feel more confident and will have fun time teaching their young charges in English,” she said.
