Second Miri AfroLatin Fiesta set to host over 100 dancers from 17 countries
MIRI: The Miri AfroLatin Fiesta will make its return next year, set to host more than 100 dance enthusiasts from 17 countries.
The second edition of the event, which was introduced last year, is scheduled for March 2- 4.
It will be run by La Danza Fitness & Dance Studio Miri and supported by Miri City Council ( MCC), Sarawak Tourism Board ( STB), Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and Metritz Hotel.
According to La Danza Fitness & Dance Studio proprietor Dr Safrina Othman, who is also the event organising chairperson, her side would expect more participants in the second edition.
“We hope that dance enthusiasts from Miri would take the opportunity to learn from worldclass dancers, who are coming here to conduct the workshops,” she told reporters during a press conference here yesterday, attended by Miri Mayor Adam Yii, the dance studio’s instructor Ramil Lopez Fernandez and a member of the organising committee Christine Yip.
Adding on, Safrina said the Afrolatin Fiesta 2018 would host several international dance artistes such as Jorjet from the US for ‘ bachata’ and ‘salsa’ dancing, Sara Lopez of Spain and Kristofer Mencak of Sweden for ‘ kizomba’, El Cruz and Nadege from Luxembourg, Dewa and Gung Is from Indonesia as well as Mutati (Kenya/Australia).
“The returning artistes will be Azlan & Mabel and DJ Selva from Malaysia, Gupson from Canada, Ana Palma from the Philippines, Theo from Norway and Paris from Australia,” she said, adding that the festival would also include other activities such as workshops on ‘salsa’, ‘kizomba’, ‘urban kiz’, ‘ bachata’ and ‘ pachanga’, a gala night and nightly parties.
Meanwhile in his remarks, Yii assured the festival organiser of MCC’s full support for events aimed at promoting this city, as well as those encouraging healthyliving.
“I suggest that the organiser of this second Miri Afrolatin Fiesta to also aggressively promote the event in Singapore, to attract Singaporeans to come to Miri. They can take advantage of the lower currency rates and also the direct Singapore-Miri flights,” he said.
