Second Miri AfroLatin Fiesta set to host over 100 dancers from 17 countries

MIRI: The Miri AfroLatin Fiesta will make its return next year, set to host more than 100 dance enthusiast­s from 17 countries.

The second edition of the event, which was introduced last year, is scheduled for March 2- 4.

It will be run by La Danza Fitness & Dance Studio Miri and supported by Miri City Council ( MCC), Sarawak Tourism Board ( STB), Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and Metritz Hotel.

According to La Danza Fitness & Dance Studio proprietor Dr Safrina Othman, who is also the event organising chairperso­n, her side would expect more participan­ts in the second edition.

“We hope that dance enthusiast­s from Miri would take the opportunit­y to learn from worldclass dancers, who are coming here to conduct the workshops,” she told reporters during a press conference here yesterday, attended by Miri Mayor Adam Yii, the dance studio’s instructor Ramil Lopez Fernandez and a member of the organising committee Christine Yip.

Adding on, Safrina said the Afrolatin Fiesta 2018 would host several internatio­nal dance artistes such as Jorjet from the US for ‘ bachata’ and ‘salsa’ dancing, Sara Lopez of Spain and Kristofer Mencak of Sweden for ‘ kizomba’, El Cruz and Nadege from Luxembourg, Dewa and Gung Is from Indonesia as well as Mutati (Kenya/Australia).

“The returning artistes will be Azlan & Mabel and DJ Selva from Malaysia, Gupson from Canada, Ana Palma from the Philippine­s, Theo from Norway and Paris from Australia,” she said, adding that the festival would also include other activities such as workshops on ‘salsa’, ‘kizomba’, ‘urban kiz’, ‘ bachata’ and ‘ pachanga’, a gala night and nightly parties.

Meanwhile in his remarks, Yii assured the festival organiser of MCC’s full support for events aimed at promoting this city, as well as those encouragin­g healthyliv­ing.

“I suggest that the organiser of this second Miri Afrolatin Fiesta to also aggressive­ly promote the event in Singapore, to attract Singaporea­ns to come to Miri. They can take advantage of the lower currency rates and also the direct Singapore-Miri flights,” he said.
