MCC’s audit committee to monitor contractors’ performance

-

MIRI: Miri City Council ( MCC) has set up an audit committee to closely monitor the performance of all its contractors .

Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the committee comprises officers from the finance, human resource and general purpose standing committees, chaired by deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad.

The members are Concillor Abdullah Jaini, Concillor Kueh Chie Tiong, Concillor Pui Yeong Fan, Concillor Rantai Achin and Siti Suhana Rosli (secretary).

“The roles of the audit committee are essentially to review and scrutinise the performance of contractors. It will also provide a foundation to build internal control system to monitor the effectiveness of contractors in delivering their services,” said Yii.

The key focus areas of the committee are waste management, grass- cutting, drain- cleaning, market cleanliness and road maintenance.

Yii added that several contractors who did not perform had already been terminated and thus, this committee serves as a reminder to other contractors.

“Previously, we offered shortterm contracts of between three and six months, depending on their performance. With the auditing and monitoring teams to screen through the contractors’ performance, we shall open new tender for the contractors and perhaps, for a longer term,” he said.

The audit team has five subcommittees – rubbish collection, drain- cleaning, grass cutting, road maintenance, and market cleanliness.
