KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) Batu Kitang branch has kick- started its community charity drive where the public is able to donate items such as non-perishable goods and old clothing to help victims of natural disasters.

Its chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the charity drive was set up in preparation for possible natural disasters, particularly floods, which might occur.

“We don’t want to wait until disaster strikes. Hence, we decided to set up the community charity drive to brace ourselves and will be ready to provide assistance to victims by contributing the donated items,” he told a press conference at the branch’s service centre here yesterday.

Through the drive, the Batu Kitang assemblyman said the public could donate items such as non-perishable food, water, rice and even old clothing to designated collection centres.

“The donated items will then be stored at SUPP Batu Kitang branch and we will do an inventory on the items to keep track of what we have.

“Of course, we don’t wish for anything bad to happen but in the event that disasters such as flood occur, we will come and help together with other SUPP branches.”

Meanwhile, the charity drive’s organising chairman Gerald Goh said the organising committee is working with partners to set up and manage collection centres at different venues from time to time.

“In December, the public can donate their items at the Spring Shopping Mall, Vivacity Shopping Mall or Boulevard Shopping Mall, where a collection centre will be available from Dec 8 to 10, Dec 15 to 17, and Dec 22 to 24 – from 10am to 10pm.

“They can also donate to (SUPP) Batu Kitang Service Centre and for those living within the vicinity of Mile 10, they can also drop the items they are donating at SUPP 10th Mile Service Centre,” he said,.

He added that prior to dropping off the donated items at the Mile 10 Service Centre, members of the public are advised to call 082- 611210 first.

Apart from that, Goh noted that the committee had also obtained consent from the management of SJK Chung Hua Mile 4½ to accept donation of necessities from Dec 1 to 23, between 10am to noon and 2pm to 4pm.
