More people evacuated in Kelantan and Terengganu due to floods

KUALA LUMPUR: The flood worsens in Kelantan and Terengganu with the number of people evacuated having increased to 4,781 people as at 4pm yesterday.

The evacuees are now being sheltered at 93 flood relief centres, comprising 52 in Kelantan and 41 in Terengganu.

In Kelantan, the number of flood victims increased to 3,033 people at 4pm, from 2,459 people at 1pm.

Jeli is the latest district to be hit by the floods in the state, with 116 people from 30 families having been evacuated to two relief centres this afternoon.

The other flood-hit districts in the state are Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Machang and Bachok.

Meanwhile, Jalan Pasir PutehKota Bharu is closed to light vehicles as a stretch at Kampung Bukit Abai is under 0.1 to 0.3m of flood water and motorists are advised to use Jalan Pasir Puteh- Gubnung, Bachok as an alternative road.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTMB), in a statement, said the train route between Tumpat and Tanah Merah at kilometre 490.00 to 493.00 was temporarily closed yesterday for safety factor as the tracks are submerged under water.

In Terengganu, so far 1,748 people have been evacuated in the state, from 1,173 people at noon today.

Six more relief centres were opened, one each in the districts of Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Besut, Dungun, Marang and Kuala Nerus to accommodate 663 families affected by the floods, bringing the total of flood relief centres in the state to 41.

Meanwhile, Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Baharum was yesterday reported to have said that reported 2,500 members of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) were on standby to help flood victims in both the states. — Bernama
