Sarawak boy bags silver in Philippine­s muaythai tourney

KUCHING: Awangku Abdul Rahman Awang Marajaya made the state proud by bringing home the silver medal from the Fet Rao Super 4 Series bout of the Philippine­s Internatio­nal Muaythai Tournament recently.

The young state exponent gave his all throughout the 51kg showdown, but had to concede to his tough opponent from the host team, Lance Valenzuela, in the end.

Awangku Rahman, who is from Kelab Muaythai PS Sebiew Bintulu, qualified for the finals after beating another Filipino fighter Karol Maguide in the semi-final bout.

The achievemen­t of the state’s rising muaythai star earned the attention from Sarawak Muaythai Associatio­n ( PMNS) president Jumaat Ibrahim.

“I underst a nd t hat t h i s is Awangku Rahman’s first internatio­nal exposure, and I’m happy with his performanc­e.

“I also take this opportunit­y to thank Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS) and Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n (SSC) for their ongoing support without which, it would be hard for us to unearth and groom good muaythai talents, especially in view of the Malaysia Games next year,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Awangku Rahman was among five national exponents competing in the tournament, held at Benguet in the Philippine­s.

Nur Amisha Azrilrizal was excellent in the Women’s 60kg category where she clinched the gold medal.

The other three also staged a commendabl­e performanc­e.

Mohd Sadam Yahya bagged the silver medal from the Men’s 60kg category, while Nur Khairunnis­a Muhamad Riduan and Mohamad Azeem Ismail brought home bronze medals from Women’s 54kg and Men’s 67kg bouts, respective­ly.
